Dear Vivian Ross,
Because we spend every day together, sometimes I find myself not able to comprehend all the changes that are happening as-they-happen. It's when I look at a photo from a month before, or your daddy is surprised by a "new" trick that he sees you do that I realize time truly is moving quickly! You, baby girl, are becoming more of a big girl every day.
Your personality is soooo alive and more evident to us, and ooooooh, it is so fun to see. You LOVE being a helper. Your great Aunt Elsie visited us recently and the whole day she kept saying how astonished she was by what a good listener you were. I think I take that for granted sometimes... When I ask you to do something, you usually (95%) do it the first time I ask. Throwing things away, sitting down in your chair, coming to your room for a diaper change, when it is time for nap... It's so adorable, actually! :)
I am so thankful for you, Vivian Ross. You are a wonderful, loving daughter that brings us joy each day. The Lord blessed us by allowing us to be your earthly parents. May we never take this for granted.
Love,
Mama!

Trusting Mama
Dear Vivian Ross,
You might consider this TMI (too much information), but hopefully you will also see it as a sweet moment. This morning when you woke up and made your peep-cry (not a big fuss, just enough to get us up and going), your daddy went in to get you. There was a strong stench of poop wafting in your room and before he could inspect as he picked you up, he felt it on his arm (oops)! Because he needed to head off to the office in a matter of minutes,* he called in mama-reinforcements quickly! *Sidenote: your daddy is the world's best of pitching in and helping out with diapers, bath time, play time, etc., so please know this was a rare moment of running out of the situation!* :)
So, we (you and I) went to work on cleaning up the mess. First, it was a surgical removal of pajamas (two layers of PJs since it's cold this winter and you are proficient at kicking your blankets off). I laid you on the changing table and you watched quietly and intently as I worked. Each time I stopped to look at how you were taking this loooooooooong process, I would turn to see your sweet smile on your face. It was precious! You didn't wiggle, squirm away, fuss about the long process, or cry about the discomfort you must have been experiencing! Please understand that for a toddler-aged babe, this is abnormal, baby girl...
So in the midst of the smell (and baby girl, there was a smell), the mess (oooooh was there a mess--- imagine--- all the way up to your shoulder blades...), and the wipes and wash clothes and such, I saw a most awesome moment. You didn't have a worry in your soul. You didn't have a moment of fret in your little bones. You didn't have a fear of the unknown. All you had was trust in your mama that I would take care of you.
My prayer is that you will always know that I am here to take care of you in the ways that you need. Understand what I am saying--- I will always be here to take care of your needs. I will help clean up the messes life throws at you. I will help walk you through the process of what to do when you are covered in _____ (fill in the blank... grief, stress, worry, frustration, confusion...). I hope that you always know that you can come to me with anything that you need and that you will always trust that I can help clean up the messes of life.
Thank you, sweet girl, for trusting me beyond measure and for reminding me how important my daily actions are in the role of gaining your sweet trust along life's path.
All my love,
Mama

Mr. Michael at Publix
Dear Vivian Ross,
During the first little bit after you started to walk (October 2010), I let you down out of my arms in the grocery store while talking to "Mr. Michael." Mr. Michael is a fellow that is about 30ish and has Downs Syndrome. It was the first time we had met him and he was describing how much he loved your name, how he wished he could have a family one day, and how he would love to have a little girl just like you. Now, keep in mind that you are a MAMA's girl. And when I say Mama's girl, giiiiiiirl, I mean it. You don't jump at the chance to go to anyone else but Mama most days, and squeal when we try to push you into hugging on anyone but Mama and Daddy. So, here Mr. Michael and I were... talking... and you walked right over to Mr. Michael, let him pick you up, and hugged his sweet neck for what felt like hours, although I am sure it was only moments... It was then that I realized, amongst others sweet moments, that you already knew the power of love. Mr. Michael's heart has been yours ever since.
No matter if we are driving into the parking lot, or ready for our groceries to be carried out, Mr. Michael is always ready to see us! He tells you he loves you, he picks you up right out of your car seat, and you light up his life in the most special, special way.
How thankful I am to have a child that knows who needs to feel loved.
Love,
Mama

Moments to Cherish
Dear Vivian Ross,
My biggest prayer for you is that you will define yourself as a child of God all the days of your life. May you love greatly, laugh often, listen intently, and learn continuously. May there always be a measurement amounting to more good days than bad; may your prayers be filled with thanksgiving; and may you understand the happiness and joy that you bring to those that surround you.
You are a precious little girl who is cautious and careful, you are an observer of life in all things big and small, and you already know how to love greater than this world. Your daddy and I bask in the moments of being your parents, and we are thankful EVERY DAY that the Lord has entrusted us to be your earthly parents. It is the biggest blessing we have experienced.
Within these pages I hope to capture the sweet moments that happen, although knowing before I begin that I will fail to describe them all... Funny moments, trying times, silly stories, and great memories--- that is my goal. My hope is that you will have a written account of the love that surrounds you to prepare for the days that you are feeling a bit lost in this big, big world. For, my dear, you are special, and there has never been (and never will be) anyone like you ever in the world.
With all my love,
Mama
